im in the middle of swapping my auto to a manual. i need the diagram that tells me what pins do what on that connector to the passenger side rear of the engine! thanks!

I have the diagrams for a 2000, which are somewhat different due to the DIS. What connections are you trying to reestablish?

if its the oval one marked in the pic.. thats going to the aw's computer for the tranny shifts/loads..

Can't tell from just the hole but I'll go home and get a pic of what I'm talking about. In my 98 there are 3 connectors (on an auto) that need to be disconnected to remove the engine/trans/x-case

That does not tell me diddly about what harnesses you are attempting to connect.
In case you are not aware, the wiring diagrams for the later XJ's are grouped according to subsystem function. For example, if the wiring is ignition related, that is in one section. If its transmission related, that's another section, and so forth.
Now what wires are you trying to connect?

You circled what appears tp be one or two connectors that are ganged into a common wiring harness. (It's kinda hard to tell from such a far distance.)
Are the connectors currently mated? If so, what parts of the engine do the wires run to? Once I know that, I can give you the "pin-outs" for the connectors in question, since that is what you are looking for.

They are currently connected. It connects all of the engine and transmission sensors/injectors to the wiring harness on the jeep itself. I disconnected it when I removed the engine

that shows it too me, but doesnt give me the pin outs to the connector

You should have three connectors at that location, one is the connector from the auto trans Transmission Control Assembly to the Transmission Control Module, another is the connector from the Transmission Range Sensor (NSS) to the Transmission Control Module, and the other is connector C107, which has some transmission control wiring but also has alot of other non-trans wiring in it.
I'm not familiar with the wiring required for a manual transmission, or the switches/sensors mounted on a manual transmission; I do know that most auto transmission modules and sensors won't be reused.
The main thing you'll need is a different Powertrain Control Module (PCM), configured for a manual transmission.
Per the '98 parts catalog, the PCM for a 4.0, federal emissions, manual transmission is P/N 56041531AB

YES!!!! thats exactly what i needed. yes there were 3 wiring connectors on the firewall
